Indosat Subscribers Can Now Enjoy Faster Mobile Broadband

Operator selects Nokia Siemens Networks to enhance its 3G network, and reduce carbon footprint

Subscribers of PT Indosat Tbk, the second largest cellular operator in Indonesia, can now experience faster downloading and browsing on their smartphones. Nokia Siemens Networks enhances Indosat’s networks to deliver faster, congestion-free services for speeds of up to 42 Mbps. The vendor also enables Indosat to reduce its network energy consumption by 50%.

“We are proud to launch the fastest Internet access service, providing DC-HSPA+ speeds of up to 42 Mbps per user. This makes us the first Asian operator and the second in the world to do so,” said Harry Sasongko, president director & CEO, Indosat. “Besides fast downloads for users, Indosat also creating a ‘green telco’ through network modernisation that reduces power consumption, increases efficiency, and contributes to an eco-friendly environment.”

As part of the enhancement, Nokia Siemens Networks has provided its latest 3G network software to support up to 42 Mbps download speed. The vendor has deployed its SGSN to ensure effective traffic offload. In addition to this, the vendor has implemented Flexi Multiradio Base Station to facilitate a quicker migration to LTE, while keeping its carbon footprint greener and extremely cost-effective. While the network in Surabaya has already gone live at the end of May, the network in Medan will go live at the end of this month.

“The increased adoption of smartphones has led to an exponential surge in data traffic worldwide, and Indonesia is no exception to this fact. Mobile Operators to Spend Nearly $850m on Fixed-Mobile Convergence and 4G Equipment in 2013

The growing use of mobile broadband services by handsets, laptops, MIDs, and mobile CE devices will place ever-increasing demands on 3G networks. In the end, 4G networks will be required because people use devices wherever they are.

Meanwhile, one way to reduce the stress on network capacity is through the use of fixed-mobile convergence (FMC), which routes traffic through customers’ wired broadband connections when they are at home. New data from ABI Research suggests that capital expenditure by mobile operators on 4G base station gateways and FMC-related carrier equipment will approach $850 million in 2013.

“FMC is not just about relieving networks’ voice traffic congestion, but data too,” says principal analyst Philip Solis. “3G handsets with Wi-Fi, laptops that often feature cellular connections, the new class of Mobile Internet Devices, and other mobile broadband-enabled consumer electronic products – all add to network load. Operators’ need for FMC and 4G equipment to meet that extra demand creates real opportunities for vendors.”

All these factors mean necessary changes to the mobile network landscape. FMC requires a well-integrated network incorporating unified cross-platform applications.

As femtocells are gradually introduced, they will up the ante as well, becoming embedded as a function in any number of customer premises equipment, from DSL gateways to set-top boxes.

The $850 million capital expenditures on the part of the network operators will be spread between FMC platforms, 4G base stations, and the 4G gateways that aggregate their traffic. [ABI Research]

Mobile Operators to Begin Migration to All-IP Mobile Networks by 2010

Network operators are planning to roll out all-IP networks beginning in the next two years, according to a new Research Brief from ABI Research. The move to an Internet Protocol-based infrastructure is a natural evolution for the mobile network as broadband services — including Voice over IP, and other SIP (Session Initiation Protocol) services – begin to be deployed. The industry aims to rival mobile WiMAX (Worldwide Interoperability for Microwave Access), which has similar aims and timescale.

In early 2008 there will be full 3GPP standards for mobile networks allowing IP-based services to be deployed, a process that ABI Research analysts expect to start in 2010, following trials in 2009.

“As we move to the end of the decade, mobile networks will emerge with a flat all-IP architecture using 3GPP standards to deliver multimedia services and VoIP (Voice over Internet Protocol). Operators want to control operating costs by eliminating the current dual circuit and packet switched networks,” says ABI Research analyst Ian Cox. “This will enable service delivery platforms and IMS (IP Multimedia Subsystem) to be deployed in the network, streamlining operations and allowing new services to be introduced quickly.”

For users, says Cox, all-IP provides better and more compelling services and delivers higher data rates, for video and rich voice sessions.

For operators, all-IP allows services and transport in the network to be separated and to evolve independently. This will speed up the development of content and services, to the advantage of the whole industry. [ABI Research]
