Forecast: Mobile UGC to Yield $7.3B by 2013

By Jason Ankeny

Ad-funded social networking will contribute the bulk of mobile user-generated content revenues by 2013 according to a new forecast issued by market analysis firm Juniper Research, which anticipates the total value of the UGC (User Generated Content) market will grow from nearly $1.1 billion in 2007 to $7.3 billion in 2013.

According to Juniper Research, ad revenues will yield more than a third of user-generated content revenues by the end of the forecast period--by that time, the number of active mobile social network users will rise to 730 million from 54 million in 2008, with the Far East and China leading the charge.

Juniper adds that personal content delivery services will account for more than 9 billion downloads by 2013, with 32 percent of them ad-supported, but contends that operators must also reduce data costs outside of bundles to stoke casual use of mobile social networking and dating services.
